Description
Most geography courses are based on lists: capitals, flags, exports, repeat. Every Place Has Reasons Geography is built the other way around. Every fact in it is attached to a consequence — this is how the land is, so this is how people live — because that’s the version of geography that actually stays with a student.
The course runs thirty weeks, one sixty-minute session per week, and covers ten regions of the world plus an optional extra lesson on American Samoa. It’s written to a ninth- through tenth-grade reading level and assumes no prior geography course. Nothing about teaching it requires a geography background – it is designed to be nearly open and go with very low prep time required.
How a Region Works
There are 10 Regions covered in this text. Every region follows the same three-week rhythm:
- Week 1 — Explore the World. The physical geography: landforms, water, climate, resources, and where people cluster and why.
- Week 2 — Experience the People. Daily life, food, art, and tradition, through two or three specific, named cultures — a market in Marrakech, a Kente weaver in Ghana’s Volta region, a stop sign in Iqaluit — rather than one flattened picture of an entire continent.
- Week 3 — Show What You Know. A full test week: a ten-minute review, a twenty-five-question test, and an answer key. Every third week is assessed; nothing else is. An optional activity is included this week as well for teachers who have extra time or who want to modify the way they use the test.
Designed for the Teacher Who’s Never Taught This Before
There is no textbook and no student workbook. The lesson itself is written to be read aloud. It includes everything a teacher needs to teach a thoughtfully prepared lesson: a lesson objective, a governing question, a pacing guide, lesson, a two-minute map orientation, and a closing check with model answers. One optional activity is included per session, but the lesson works whether or not the class has time to run it.
Ten Regions, Not a World Tour
A geography course covering ten regions in thirty weeks could easily turn into a highlight reel — a flag, a fact, a stereotype, next. This one doesn’t. Every region was checked against a single question: does this read as a place people live in now, or only as a place with a history? Where a region risked one story standing in for the whole, it was rebuilt with a present-day counterweight before it shipped.
